*He looks at the chains, then at the axe, avoiding her eyes* Is there a special way to do this? Or do I just chop the chains in two?

No promises lass, if'n ye shift ye die. Nae questions asked. I happen ta value me life and the lads and since we was poisoned ta save ye if'n ye shift, ye die period -Maddy gives her a blank look and she would know she means it with all her heart-

*Kiliyen frowns, not answering her. He hefts the axe once more, then pauses* Tighten the chain, miss. I don't know how to get it off your wrists, but I can break it from the wall at least.

*Carolyne looks out into the hall towards Maddy and bites her lip. She turns her eyes to Kiliyen, and they are wide with fear, but she does as he instructs her, cringing away to one side and tightening the chain*

*Continues to avoid looking the girl in the eye. When the chain is tight, he gives a solid chop to the point where the chain connects to the wall, intending to give Maddy as much of the chain as he can*

*Kiliyen looks at Maddy, taking hope in the fact that the girl didn't shift yet, thinking perhaps she won't shift while the chains are on her wrists, giving them time to find out about the altar. He turns and quickly chops the other chain loose*

falling to the floor*
*Carolyne looks at them briefly, then at her hands, her eyes wide. She looks then at Kiliyen and comes to him to fling her arms around his neck in gratitude* Oh thank you!!

*Carolyne stops abruptly, hurt and frightened. She drops her eyes, turning her face to one side as she speaks softly* Garimond has.. a ring. It's a very fine ring. I am sure he would want you to have it for freeing me. And Father will give you something too, I'm sure.
She looks at Maddy, then crouches down and gathers the chains in her hands. With another hurt glance at Kiliyen, she carries the chains over to Maddy, holding them out to her* He said he would give you the chains. I want you to have them too. The axe should go with them.

*As the chains dropped from Carolyne, both Maddy and Kiliyen feel the fatigue leave them. Their other wounds are still there, but any fatigue or headache, etc is now gone*

-Arches a brow as the fatigue leaves and almost pokes the girl with her sword but Kiliyen kept her away successfully. She takes the chains and slings them over her shoulder and looks pointedly at the girl- These are for you if'n ye try ta hurt us we will putcha back in 'em ya'hear?
-looks at the bones and stuff on the ground- I ain't a treasure seeker mind ya but I should be compensated since I nae be a workin' at the tavern fer me keep and that means I nae be gettin' paid....
-looks the girl over again- I donnae see her shiftin' mayhap it has ta be a certain day, or full moon or somethin' ta that affect?

*Carolyne lifts her chin to Maddy, her voice growing curt* I will not be hurting anyone. I should think my father and Garimond succeeded in destroying the altar, don't you? I will see that you are properly compensated. This is, after all, my father's castle. I am no pauper.

*She looks at Maddy, frowning severely at the poke she gave to her husband's remains* Have you no respect? *Her eyes flash with anger, but the other words then sink in and she looks down the hall, wondering. She begins walking quickly towards the stairs*
*The black blanket in the filthy cell flows to life as Scum-Monkey darts out the cell door. Carolyne screams as he descends upon her, his wings spreading around her like a shroud. Then, like a dark mist from a stagnant waste, both disappear from the hall*

*Stops hacking at the door, clutching his ribs and trying not to pant, his teeth tightly gritted against his frustration and pain. He looks at Maddy then and comes over to her, kneeling down and pulling her into his arms, holding her. He says nothing, having nothing to say*

*Should Maddy keep the axe and chains, she will find that both are considered extremely valuable. The axe worked on the chains because it is enchanted to cut through enchanted things - like enchanted armor, enchanted chains, etc. The chains are enchanted to hold the prisoner in complete stasis, and are also enchanted to withstand any sort of normal weapon*
*The ring can be found on Garimond's hand and is less valuable but nevertheless valuable. It was sold to Garimond with the claim that it made the wearer not need to eat. In truth, however, it prevents thirst from being a problem but only masks the effects of hunger*
(For the curious, Garimond was guarding her cell when the castle was attacked. He was trapped down there from the stairs caving in, and died of starvation. He told Carolyne that he had to leave because he knew he was dying and it was the only hope he could give her, knowing that hope would carry her much farther in the long wait. He did not think she would go undiscovered for so long.)

*He nods and rises, helping her to her feet. He goes to the body of Garimond and fetches the ring. Picking up the axe and chains to carry for her he looks at her* Not as much compensation as you deserve, Maddy, but it's all yours. I wouldn't have made it without you. *He reaches out one arm to put around her shoulders and begins leading her out of the dungeon*

I'm not short changing myself. *He tries to smile at her but can't find it in himself to do so, still feeling horrible for Carolyne and her husband* We did it together. But don't worry about it now. *He leads her up the stairs and out of the castle, looking around for the horses*
