![]() A prophecy fulfilled. c. 2003 D.L. Stroupe |
Now, long ago Draegon had shown a vision to Cordell where he saw himself as an old man, near death. When the vision turned around, Cordell saw that his eyes had been sewn shut. Draegon told him that this was because he would witness a murder - the murder of his own brother. Cordell died without the vision having been fulfilled, but though Jarred was Corbin's father, he was also - by extension of Corbin's previous life - his brother.
Aware of the vision, Draegon did what he could to protect him, but eventually Corbin was captured by Cyril's friends. A woman named Eliza threw a powder on the boy and told him that it nullified his magic. The powder was as harmless as talc, but her words were devastating because he believed her. Corbin was as helpless as any young child. His eyes were sewn shut, and by manipulating the aging magic of the Vast Night Kingdom, they forced his growth at an agonizing pace. They then abondoned the 'old man' in the woods, confident that he would die there. Even if he were found, who would believe the doddering old fool? Lost and wandering, Corbin wanted to flee for Eidolon, but getting there required his magic, so he could not believe it was possible. Nor could he find his way home to his father and the Vast Night Kingdom, because he was blind and had no idea where he was. Traumatized and despairing, he imagined that his realm of Eidolon would wither and die, collapsing and falling apart like cardboard in a rain. And so it was. |
